Latest Reports

08/20/2008 -- Don't get schooled.

Just because school has started doesn't mean fishing season has ended. In fact, the next couple of months should be the best of the year. So drop the kids off at school and come down to the fly shop. Go fishing!

08/14/2008 -- High Country Beauty

The monsoons have abated for a few days, gas prices are down, so get out and visit the high country. The wild flowers are spectacular on the Alpine Plateau, Big and Little Cimarron areas. The small stream fishing is excellent on dry-droppers rigs.

08/11/2008 -- Temporarily Monsoonally Reprieved

Say what? Well, it looks like the afternoon showers will go away for a couple of days and maybe not be so intense after that. Any teachers out there? Fish now!

08/08/2008 -- Monsoons, Dries and Droppers

The August monsoon season has arrived, so expect streams to turn muddy in the early to late afternoons, so get there early!! The dry-dropper combination is working just about anywhere except the East Portal which continues to be its own eccentric self. Check river flows for extreme spikes due to downpours because those won't clear up by morning like the normal muddiness will do.

08/01/2008 -- Dry and HOT!

So much for the monsoons. Hot and dry weather will persist through the weekend, making the daytime fishing tough with the bright, hot sun. Try some higher creeks and rivers, but be careful because many are still high (but clear). It's a great time of year for the famed "Dry/Dropper" rig!

07/25/2008 -- Monsoon Season is here?

Even though we haven't had much rain in Montrose, there have been significant downpours in the high country. The San Miguel and Lake Fork both spiked up over 200 cfs 2 nights ago making them high and off color for a couple of days. If you are planning a trip to any of the high mountain streams, check the streamflow on our website to see if there have been any big increases in the flows. You can also give us a call and get the most up to date info we have about stream conditions. The Black Canyon continues to do well on hopper patterns from Chukar to Pleasure Park. The East Portal has been a bit of a mystery this week as no significant hatches have really happened yet. Be prepared to try many patterns and switch from dries to nymphs frequently. The Uncompahgre through town is a very fishable color, especially in the mornings. Use dark nymphs and try dry caddis in the evenings.

07/18/2008 -- Dry-Droppers?

Stream flows are steadily coming down and the fish are starting to look up. it's time to head to the high country and fish the smaller streams which are generally clear, but still have a significant amount of velocity. The dry-dropper setup is definitely worth trying on the East Fork, Big Blue, Fall Creek, Curecanti Creek, Cebolla Creek, etc., etc.

07/16/2008 -- Hoppers Galore

You thought the stonefly hatch was good, just wait till the fish are fully on hoppers! They've already started taking hoppers and stimulators and with great flows, hopper fishing should be the best it's been in a while. Hop on.

07/14/2008 -- Cimarron still a little high

Water is still pretty high at the East and Middle Forks of the Cimarron, but you can still pick up fish on dry dropper rig. Below the dam is clearing and a bit high, but getting real close. Should be good soon!

07/12/2008 -- Reports Coming Monday

We've sent several people up to the Cimarron country yesterday and today, so we will have first-hand information for you Monday. Things are really heating up!
